Description: This episode of Songbook features Dutch producer, DJ and innovator San Holo, born Sander van Dijck. On his LP, simply titled "album1", the 28 year-old combines danceable EDM with elements of indie. Description: The Da Pá Virada Sessions series portrays the best musicians in Brazilian jazz today. All sessions were recorded in São Paulo and offer a unique experience: they offer a fresh look at the Brazilian music scene. Among the bands featured in this series is Quartabê, a unique Brazilian quartet that draws from a wide variety of influences, including São Paulo's avant-garde movement, free improvisation, pop, and electronic music. Description: WOMEX 2018 - Since 1994, World Music Expo (WOMEX) has been attracting musicians, agents, a great number of press agencies, as well as media companies from all over the world. Its main exposition event has been held in various locations throughout Europe, including Berlin, Brussels, Marseille, Stockholm, Seville, Cardiff, and Budapest. In 2018, WOMEX was held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. One of its showcase participants, Nelida Karr, sings and plays guitar, piano, cello and percussion. She writes songs suffused with the many influences she assimilated growing up in Malabo in Africa's only Spanish-speaking country, Equatorial Guinea. The result is an eclectic mix that she nevertheless incorporates into a sound all her own.

Description: Sensation - What began fifteen years ago as a one-off in the Amsterdam ArenA is now a worldwide phenomenon that takes place in stadiums and arenas around the globe. Every event has around 40,000 to 45,000 tickets available. For the first time in history, Sensation Amsterdam had a black and white edition named "Angels and Demons." The event, which had 20 000 people dressed in black and 20 000 in white, was sold out. Performing artists included David Guetta, Sam Feldt, Don Diablo, Yellow Claw, and Nicky Romero.

Description: Lucky Chops - Live at BIRD - The NYC band Lucky Chops rose to fame when a video of their performance at a subway station went viral on YouTube in 2015. Since then, the energetic quintet has been entertaining audiences all over the world. The band was formed in 2006, when trumpeter Joshua Gawel, saxophonist Daro Behroozi, trombonist Josh Holcomb, tubist Raphael Buyo, and drummer Charles Sams, met during their education at Fiorello H. Besides touring globally, Lucky Chops also aspires to inspire new generations of musicians by regularly performing at clinics and educational outreaches. In August 2018, they performed their high-energy brassy funk at BIRD, in Rotterdam.

Description: Jazz à Ramatuelle: Parisien meets Kühn & Portal - Since his first appearance at Jazz in Ramatuelle in 2010, saxophonist Émile Parisien has made his mark among the most talented musicians of his generation. On the soprano saxophone, his favorite instrument, he invented a unique lyrical style. As part of his participation in the 2016 edition of Jazz à Ramatuelle, Parisien invited two European jazz legends to join his ensemble: the German pianist Joachim Kühn (*1944) and the legendary multi-instrumentalist Michel Portal (*1935). Over 80 years old, the latter is an incomparable saxophonist, clarinetist and bandoneonist, a musical adventurer who skilfully combines jazz, classical music and film music.

Description: De La Soul - Garorock - There is a packed crowd for this De La Soul set at the 2019 Garorock Festival, and with good reason: they witness an unmissable concert by an incomparable group! Having released regular albums since 1989's 3 Feet High and Rising, the Long Island hip-hop stalwarts of De La Soul have been doing the rounds on a suitably named Gods of Rap tour alongside Public Enemy and the Wu-Tang Clan. With an opening that includes call and response, mic checks and arms waving in the air, the audience gets more than a touch of vintage appeal, something that has led to terms like "heritage rap" being associated with the group. But despite their long and influential career, the De La Soul impact has perennial relevance for much of contemporary music. They pushed boundaries back then and they continue to venture out further.

Description: Classical:NEXT 2019 - Trio Zukan - In 2014, Trio Zukan emerged from the combination of three uncommon instruments: accordion, percussion and txistu. The repertoire for this instrumental combination was non-existent at the beginning, so its members decided to promote a project with different composers, with the intention of creating a new repertoire. Today, Zukan has commissioned, revised and released more than a dozen pieces by national and international composers such as: María Eugenia Luc, Mikel Chamizo, Isabel Urrutia, Francisco José Domínguez, Vassilis Filippou, etc. The group is one of the most consolidated groups on the contemporary music scene in the Basque Country. Description: Chopin - Ballade No. 1, Op. 23 - Roberto Giordano performs Chopin's Ballade No. 1, Op. 23. The sketches of the work date back to 1831 during Chopin's eight-month stay in Vienna. The first ballade was completed in 1835 after the composer moved to Paris. The main section of the ballade is built from two main themes which return in different keys after which a thundering chord introduces the Presto con fuoco, which eventually ends the piece in a fiery double octave scale run down the keyboard. The work gained popularity after appearing on the soundtrack to the 2002 Roman Polanski film The Pianist, where it is played by Janusz Olejniczak.

Description: Von Biber - Missa Salisburgensis - In commemoration of the end of World War I, France and Czech Republic offered the Pope a concert at the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome on October 25, 2018. Czech musicologist Václav Luks conducts the choir and orchestra of his own Collegium 1704 in sacred vocal works by several 17th-century baroque composers. On the program are Jean-Baptiste Lully's (1632-1687) Te Deum, followed by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber's (1644-1704) Missa Salisburgensis. During his lifetime, Von Biber, one of greatest composers for solo violin, was known and imitated throughout Europe. He did not limit himself to the violin and was a prolific composer of sacred vocal works as well, of which this Missa Salisburgensis is a prime example.

Description: Oum El Ghait Benessahraoui, better known as Oum, provides a unique insight into Moroccan music. This singer-songwriter is considered an ambassador for Moroccan culture. Oum is strongly influenced by genres such as gospel, jazz, soul and R&B, but also African genres such as sufi, hassani, and afrobeat inspire her. Yet the influences of Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald and Whitney Houston are also strongly present in Oum's powerful voice. As a young singer, the African American vocal tradition made a deep impression on her. Description: Null + Void - While few people are familiar with the Null + Void project, many have already heard Kurt Uenala's music. After making his debut under the pseudonym Kap10Kurt in 2003, Uenala caught the attention of the world with the play "Die Sleeping". Description: Atys en Folie - Atys en folie is a parody of Jean-Baptiste Lully's lyrical tragedy Atys (1676). Atys, Lully's most famous opera, was a constant subject of parody throughout the 18th century. Description: Daucé conducts Charpentier and Du Mont - Harpsichordist and organist Sébastien Daucé leads Ensemble Correspondances in this concert recorded as part of the Valletta International Baroque Festival of 2017 at the Co-Cathédrale de St-Jean de la Valette in Malta. The concert opens with a rendition of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's late-17th century composition Te Deum. The joyful and popular prelude of this piece is familiar to many as the Eurovision Anthem. Furthermore, the concert program is made up of motets by Henry du Mont (1610-1694), an organist and baroque composer of the French school, born in the Southern Netherlands. Description: In 2018 WOMEX took place in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. One of the participants was the band Bakolo Music International. They represent the pioneers of the golden age of the Congolese rumba. Description: Handel - Rinaldo - Rinaldo (1711) is an opera by German-born composer George Frideric Handel, set during the First Crusade. With Rinaldo, Handel plunges us into a chivalrous, romantic world. With birds, dragons, lightning, and thunderbolts, this spectacular work demonstrates the dramatic mastery of the composer on a dreamlike and powerful score. Giacomo Rossi's libretto deals with Goffredo's Crusader army laying siege to Jerusalem, which king Argante defends. One of the Crusaders, knight Rinaldo, is promised to marry Goffredo's daughter Almirena if the Christians are victorious. Handel composed Rinaldo in just fourteen days, borrowing musical material from his earlier compositions. Rinaldo features "Lascia ch'io pianga," one of Handel's best-known arias, in which Rinaldo's abducted lover Almirena bemoans her tragic fate.

Description: Puccini - Tosca - Tosca is a story of overwhelming passion amidst the perils of war. Set in Rome at the time of Napoleon's advance on the city, the opera opens with the flight of Angelotti, an escaped political prisoner. He seeks refuge in a church where he is protected by Cavaradossi, a local artist who is also the lover of the famous singer, Floria Tosca. Tosca desperately begs Scarpia to spare Cavaradossi, offering her affections in exchange for his life. Tosca finds she has been tricked, however, and the artist dies at the hands of a firing squad. Facing capture for her crime, she leaps to her death to join her lover in the afterlife.

Description: Numerous musicians, booking agents, news agencies and media companies from all over the world have been attending the "World Music Exhibition" World Music Expo (WOMEX) since 1994. Description: Puccini - Tosca - Tosca is a story of overwhelming passion amidst the perils of war. Set in Rome at the time of Napoleon's advance on the city, the opera opens with the flight of Angelotti, an escaped political prisoner. He seeks refuge in a church where he is protected by Cavaradossi, a local artist who is also the lover of the famous singer, Floria Tosca. Tosca desperately begs Scarpia to spare Cavaradossi, offering her affections in exchange for his life. After securing a note saving her lover from his death sentence, she stabs Scarpia and hurries off to be with Cavaradossi. Tosca finds she has been tricked, however, and the artist dies at the hands of a firing squad. Facing capture for her crime, she leaps to her death to join her lover in the afterlife.

Handel - Rinaldo
Description: Handel - Rinaldo - Rinaldo (1711) is an opera by German-born composer George Frideric Handel, set during the First Crusade. With Rinaldo, Handel plunges us into a chivalrous, romantic world. With birds, dragons, lightning, and thunderbolts, this spectacular work demonstrates the dramatic mastery of the composer on a dreamlike and powerful score. Giacomo Rossi's libretto deals with Goffredo's Crusader army laying siege to Jerusalem, which king Argante defends. One of the Crusaders, knight Rinaldo, is promised to marry Goffredo's daughter Almirena if the Christians are victorious. Handel composed Rinaldo in just fourteen days, borrowing musical material from his earlier compositions. Rinaldo features "Lascia ch'io pianga," one of Handel's best-known arias, in which Rinaldo's abducted lover Almirena bemoans her tragic fate.

It's a real gathering for jazz addicts, inviting internationally renowned artists. The talented American singer Michelle David performs pop and gospel music that feeds the heart and soothes the soul. Having grown up with the church, she started singing at the age of four. A year later she joined her first band, The Mission of Love. In 1980 she enrolled at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City, known from the film 'Fame'. During this time, she appeared as an extra in the legendary comedy film 'Ghostbusters'. Musicals and tours with the bands of Diana Ross and Michael Bolton followed.

Chopin - Ballade No. 1, Op. 23
Description: Chopin - Ballade No. 1, Op. 23 - Roberto Giordano performs Chopin's Ballade No. 1, Op. 23. The sketches of the work date back to 1831 during Chopin's eight-month stay in Vienna. The first ballade was completed in 1835 after the composer moved to Paris. The main section of the ballade is built from two main themes which return in different keys after which a thundering chord introduces the Presto con fuoco, which eventually ends the piece in a fiery double octave scale run down the keyboard. The work gained popularity after appearing on the soundtrack to the 2002 Roman Polanski film The Pianist, where it is played by Janusz Olejniczak.
